چکیده

HST permits the study of high–z cluster galaxies in unprecedented detail and offers a unique opportunity to examine the processes driving galaxy formation. As part of our Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) intermediate redshift cluster survey, we have observed 8 galaxy clusters with redshift betwen 0.8 and 1.3. At these redshifts, galaxy clusters are still assembling and galaxies are evolving towards the populations that we observe today. Recent results from the ACS cluster survey have shown that galaxy clusters at redshift around unity show differences but also many similarities with local clusters, in terms of galaxy populations and their distribution. One of the most striking similarities is that the tight relation between galaxy colors and luminosities that applies to local early-type galaxies (the colormagnitude relation; CMR) is already in place at redshifts as high as z∼ 1.3. The very precise measurement of the scatter around the CMRs of our cluster sample permits us to constrain the formation ages of the redder early-type populations to be at z > 2.5. We will present our most recent results and discuss them as a function of cluster properties at z ∼ 1.

The Transformation of Cluster Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift

We combine imaging data from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) with VLT/FORS optical spectroscopy to study the properties of star-forming galaxies in the z = 0.837 cluster CL0152-1357. We have morphological information for 24 star-forming cluster galaxies, which range in morphology from late-type and irregular to compact early-type galaxies. We find that while most star-forming galaxies hav...

We present a color analysis of the galaxy populations of candidate clusters of galaxies from the Palomar Distant Cluster Survey (Postman et al. 1996). The survey was conducted in two broad band filters that closely match V and I and contains a total of 79 candidate clusters of galaxies, covering an estimated redshift range 0.2 < ∼ z < ∼ 1.2. We examine the color evolution in the 57 richest clus...

The properties of field elliptical galaxies at intermediate redshift . III : the Fundamental Plane and the evolution of stellar populations from z ≈ 0

We report on the study of a sample of 25 field early-type galaxies, in the redshift range z ≈ 0.1−0.5, selected on the basis of colours and morphology from the Medium Deep Survey (MDS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Surface photometry in two colors (F606W and F814W) and redshifts have been derived for all the galaxies in the sample, while velocity dispersions has been measured for 19 of t...

Luminosity Evolution of Field Early-type Galaxies to Z = 0.55

We study the Fundamental Plane (FP) of field early-type galaxies at intermediate redshift, using HST WFPC2 observations and deep Keck spectroscopy. Structural parameters and internal velocity dispersions are measured for eighteen galaxies at 0.15 < z < 0.55. Rest frame M⁄ LB ratios are determined from the Fundamental Plane and compared to those of cluster early-type galaxies at the same redshif...

The fundamental plane of EDisCS galaxies

We study the evolution of spectral early-type galaxies in clusters, groups, and the field up to redshift 0.9 using the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS) dataset. We measure structural parameters (circularized half-luminosity radii Re, surface brightness Ie, and velocity dispersions σ) for 154 cluster and 68 field galaxies. On average, we achieve precisions of 10% in Re, 0.1 dex in log Ie, and...
